  • Short-sightedness or nearsightedness (myopia) usually occurs when the eyes grow slightly too long, which means they cannot produce a clear image of objects in the distance.
  • Short sightedness is the most common refractive error among children and young adults worldwide. It occurs in 30 to 40 percent of adults in the United States and Europe, and in up to 80 percent of the Asian population.
  • You may be short-sighted.nearsighted if:
    • you have difficulty seeing objects in the distance
    • objects in the distance appear blurry
    • you need to squint or partially close your eyes to see clearly
    • you get headaches that are caused by eyestrain
    • you have difficulty seeing while driving and have trouble reading road signs, especially at night
  • It's not clear exactly why short-sightedness/nearsightedness occurs, but it's thought to be the result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors that disrupt the normal development of the eye.
  • Although it's not clear exactly why some people become short-sighted/nearsighted, there are some things that can increase your chances of developing the condition.
  • Your genes
    • Short-sightedness/nearsightedness is known to run in families, so you're more likely to develop it if one or both of your parents are also short-sighted/nearsighted.
    • Research has so far identified more than 40 genes linked to short-sightedness/nearsightedness.
    • These are responsible for the eye's structure and development and signalling between the brain and the eyes.
  • Too little time outdoors
    • Research has found that spending time outside as a child may reduce your chances of becoming short-sighted/nearsighted, and existing short-sightedness/nearsightedness may progress less quickly.
    • This may be related to light levels outdoors being much brighter than indoors.
    • Both sport and relaxation outdoors appear to be beneficial in reducing the risk of short-sightedness/nearsightedness.
  • Excessive close work
    • Spending a lot of time focusing your eyes on nearby objects, such as reading, writing, and possibly using hand-held devices (phones and tablets) and computers, can also increase your risk of developing short-sightedness/nearsightedness.
    • We, therefore, recommend an "everything in moderation" approach
    • Although children should be encouraged to read, they should also spend some time away from reading and computer games each day doing outdoor activities.
If you think you may be short-sighted/nearsighted, you should book an eye test at an optician. Having an eye test at least every two years is usually recommended, but you can have a test at any point if you have concerns about your vision. An eye test can confirm whether you're short-sighted/nearsighted.

Glasses and contact lenses have traditionally been the primary treatment for short-sightedness/nearsightedness/nearsightedness. However, those who prefer to enjoy a life free from visual aids can correct their short-sightedness/nearsightedness with vision correction surgery.

Can short-sightedness or nearsightedness (myopia) lead to blindness?

In extreme circumstances, short-sightedness or nearsightedness (myopia) can lead to serious, vision-threatening complications, including blindness. Man fann inget som talar för att närarbetet i sig orsakar myopi. Lär dig mer.
